There’s one thing you must have if you want to be getting sales for your online business.
But a lot of experts are not getting enough of it in order to hit the kind of numbers they want.
This missing ingredient is the reason why the big brands out there can launch some new type of offer, funnel, or product and see amazing results in little time.
And then when you try to do the exact same thing you get crickets.
What’s the missing ingredient?
Trust.
Let’s dive into why trust is so important to build online and how you can build it with your audience to start getting better results in your business too.
Many experts struggle to build up trust with their audience.
Let’s be honest, building up trust with your audience doesn’t come overnight.
Putting a website out there as a business card and expecting people will just engage, connect, and jump on the phone to work with you just doesn’t cut it anymore.
There’s nothing special about having a website or a sales funnel.
That’s all pretty common now.
So what’s going to get your results then?
We want to get to a place where people follow you online and say “That guy definitely knows what he’s talking about! I want to work with him one day!”
So here’s 5 tips that you can use to be able to start building up that trust online.
Table of Contents
1. Make Sure You’re Visible Online
The first thing that any expert can do is make sure you’re visible online.
You can’t grow an online business without actually showing up and giving away value on the web.
It’s the old “Show people you help them by actually helping them” trick.
Works every time.
That usually involves creating content and leading with value over a long period of time.
You can pinpoint what you’re knowledgeable about and then give some of that away online.
Maybe you have a YouTube channel, or you like to write, or you have a podcast, whatever that is showing up and being visible consistently online for a long period of time goes a really long way.
Think about some of the big picture purchases that you’ve made when you were investing in your business or getting ready to make a big decision.
You probably invested with someone that you felt some kind of connection with because you were consuming a lot of their content online and you felt they could help you get the kind of results you want.
The reality is there’s probably a hundred other people that solve the same problem you solve at the end of the day.
But people want to do business with people they like and connect with.
This has been shown in studies that over time as people have more connections and more interactions with a brand, they start to become more emotionally connected and less price sensitive.
That means if you have a $5,000 – $10,000 offer but someone has been following you around for years they’re far more likely to sign up than someone who just found you last week and hasn’t really been exposed to you.
So one of the best things you can do is start to put together a long-term strategy where you are creating regular content, showing up online, working on partnerships with others in your industry, and overall sprinkling value on the web.
2. Lead With Value
Speaking of value – a great way to build trust is to lead with it.
We’ve all seen these spammy marketers out there running insanely big promises and trying to over-hype people into purchasing their products.
We’re in a time and space on the internet where you’re going to have to go one of two ways.
Either push your messaging all the way to the spammiest of spam (there’s definitely people that will do that) or you’re going to have to start playing a long term strategy where you lead with a lot of value.
I don’t know about you… but that’s the kind of marketing I feel good about doing.
Integrity driven brands want to start out with a really positive relationship, which happens when you lead with value.
Oftentimes that means that you give away a lot of free content showing people you really know your stuff.
This could be creating some small products, workshops, PDFs, downloadables, ebooks, etc. so people can get to know how you work to be able to choose to work with you at another time down the road.
3. Show Your Unique Process
Showing your unique process to your audience is super valuable to gain trust.
A lot of people are looking for someone that has a proven process to solve their problem and get a particular result.
You will pique a lot of interest if you can show people that you have a specific process, unique framework, something that you do differently that can help someone solve a problem.
So what is the process that you use to get results for whatever you help people with?
Start to dial that in.
It definitely takes time, especially if you’re in a really commoditized market like advertising or email marketing for example.
A lot of people can seem to do very similar things but you have to show your unique spin on it.
How do you do things differently? Who are the people you connect with? What unique experiences do you bring?
Once that’s dialed in you can create content based out of that framework and those unique things that you do so people can trust in your process to get the results they want.
4. Budget For Promoting Content
Allocating a portion of your budget every month to creating and promoting content is important to make sure you’re getting in front of the right people to build that trust.
You don’t want to create a bunch of great content but have it just sitting on your website where no one is exposed to it because the truth is people don’t just magically find stuff.
You need to go out there and promote it.
A great way to do that is on social media organically and through paying to run ads to get your content in front of a wider audience.
You can also set up partnerships so you can have other people promote your content to their audience.
There’s a lot of creative ways to promote your content but the important thing is making sure you allocate a portion of your time and budget to making sure it happens.
5. Use Every Interaction To Build Authority
The last tip is to make sure you treat every interaction as a way to build authority.
A lot of people miss pretty easy steps in order to get an extra way to engage with their audience.
One of the huge ones I see is thank you pages.
What you want to avoid is someone opting in for something on your website, which brings them to a thank you page that says something like “your download is on the way.” Nothing else.
That’s a missed opportunity to build authority.
So one of the things we like to do with our thank you pages is put videos there.
We say something like “Hey thanks so much for signing up, let me show you how this thing works that you just signed up for, a bit about who we are, and how you can work with us.”
Additionally in your email marketing make sure that you are building your list with a regular email series going out, and nurturing those leads so that over time you have people who’ve been following you for a while, getting a lot of value and will hopefully want to work with you sometime in the future.
Every interaction that you have with someone online from your website to social media can always be treated as a way to engage with people and build authority.
Trust Takes Time
A lot of experts want to go out there and run the same funnel as Sam Ovens or Amy Porterfield.
They end up doing almost the exact same thing but don’t see the kind of results they want.
Those big names have invested a lot of time and resources in building up their brand, authority, trust and showing people results that they can get over time.
You need to invest in a long term strategy to help you do the same thing.
I can tell you that over time this will compound and you will really start to see the kind of results that you want with your campaigns.
How great will it be when you go to launch a new product or offer and you’ve already got an audience of people who trust in you.
